Can an executive career be planned?
Speaker: Isabel Linares, President of the Sanitas Foundation
On Thursday 22nd March, the ie Mentor programme had pleasure in welcoming Isabel Linares, President of the Sanitas Foundation to speak on the subject of whether an executive career can be planned.
Using examples from her own career, Isabel highlighted the changing workplace environment that is the context for employees today. Today’s companies are making less promises to their employees and the concept of spending many years in the same organisation is no longer as relevant as it once was. As companies look to outsource non-core functions, divest divisions and become flatter in their structure, the management pyramid is becoming steeper. This is manifested in a lesser availability of middle management roles in which aspiring employees can develop and a much higher workload attached to those roles.

Why Is It So Difficult To Serve Our Differentiated
Fabrizio Salvador, IE Professor of Operations and Technology Management.
More and more, we want products and services to adapt to us, instead of the other way around. Unfortunately, oftentimes companies find it very hard to become customer-centric and get rid of their "mass production"culture and systems. The first step to engage in thistransition is, pragmatically, to recognize which factors oppose this change. Based on a three-year study of Fortune-500 North American company, some major "killers" of the transition towards customer-centricity are presented and discussed.

In this session we will explore the recent history of the young mobile music industry, searching for clues that will help us understand its future, and explore the recent trends in a market that has a direct link with our emotions and our life.

IMPLEMENTING ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS IN SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISES (SMEs)
Oswaldo Lorenzo, Professor of Operations and ERP Systems, and Academic Director of the Executive Master of Management in Global Supply Chain at IE.
Enterprise Systems (ES) vendors (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Microsoft) are now turning their marketing sights on small and medium-sized companies. However, most information about ES implementation experiences is from large manufacturing and service companies. There is little research related to the ES implementation process in small and medium-sized firms. A number of questions can help us to understand this phenomenon: Are ES appropriate for SMEs? What kinds of organizational, contextual and other factors influence ES success in small businesses? The results of different investigations in this field will be explained.

Blogs: Do They Really Matter?
Enrique Dans, Professor and Area Chair, Information Systems and Technologies at Instituto de Empresa
Blogs are everywhere, from the CEO's office to teenagers? rooms. Last July, Technorati reported more than 50 million blogs, growing at the amazing pace of one per second. Of course, the majority are completely irrelevant to people other than the author and - not guaranteed - close friends and relatives; but imagine that just a mere 1% of all blogs published in the world were relevant to you... that amount of information - produced about you, your company, your brands, your competitors or your life in general, personal or professional - is absolutely huge. What's today's professional to do with such a vast array of information? Do blogs matter? To whom? Should we read or even write blogs? What for?

Analysis Of Different Criteria For Segmenting Sport Consumers
Eduardo Fernández-Cantelli, Professor and Director of the Marketing Area at Instituto de Empresa
Several measures have been used in segmenting sport consumers. The traditional and natural ones include demographic and geographic criteria. However, and due to the nature of the sport, it has been showed that those criteria appears to be somewhat ineffective in identifying homogeneous behaviors. The power of sport franchises, and the influence that those franchises have on sport consumption, leads to conclude that brand loyalty is an effective way to segment sport consumers. Segmentation of sport consumer based on loyalty contributes into the development of adequate marketing strategies in sport organizations.

Web 2.0: Trends And Realities
Enrique Dans, Professor and Area Chair, Information Systems and Technologies at Instituto de Empresa
What's the web for? eCommerce? Monetising audiences? Flashing banners and pop-ups? Naaah, forget the whole thing. Even though 90% of the world population is still away from the Internet, the vanguard of the wired world has left behind the rusty "last century's web" and is already moving into the so called "Web 2.0". A brave new world characterised by a totally different interaction paradigm, totally rewritten rules, a new meritocracy and a new way to understand business and relationships. A metamorphosis that will affect the way we relate to each other, the way we consume, the way we vote...
